  • Unknown Brown legless bug about 10mm long

    Hi,

I am trying to get an identification for a small bug that is about 10 mm long and moves like a caterpiller but has little claws no legs.

  • Another collembolan?

I have recently been looking for invertebrates under fallen sycamore bark and have been seeing some small blue-tinged creatures which would appear to be collembolans. After checking with Steve Hopkin’s Gallery, Lepidocyrtus curvicollis (Entomobryinae) or L. cyaneus would seem a reasonable fit. However, I have had more than usual difficulty in generating images clear enough for comparison. Today it occurred to me that the problem may partly be a result of individuals that I am looking at having some form of coating round them (a protective mucilage perhaps?). The attachment, hopefully, makes the point. and I should be grateful for comment.

  • Hi found this spider in our porch can any one tell us what type it is ? Thanks

Spotted in Erith on the 17th of December.

    Thanks.

  • Fleas or True Bugs?

Can I start off by saying what a marvellous website you've created - I've learned so much from your pages and discussion forums.

I've been inundated with tiny flies/fleas in recent weeks (photo attached).  I've ignored them up to now in the hope that they'll go away but they seem to be determined to cling on in the bathroom, kitchen and even in my bedroom!  Occasionally, when I'm typing away on my laptop, one floats across my screen as if it has just popped out from between the keys or from the fan vent.

Mostly I find them on and around windows and window sills where I have a number of houseplants. Although I do not have any pets of my own there are plenty of cats around the shared grounds and garden -  plus a dog and a few pet rabbits in a nearby pen.  I usually have my windows open most of the day.  These little flies/fleas are getting on my nerves now - you could say they are starting to bug me.

In reading your website and others - e.g. "Amateur Etymologist's Society" , Wikipedia, etc - I've made some attempts at identification but without any real conviction.  For what it's worth I think they may be Cheese Flies - Piophila Casei - even though I have never found them anywhere near my cheese - not yet!

I've started to develop a neurosis over accidental miasis now - so any assurances you can offer would be most welcome.

They are no more than 2 to 3mm long but as you can see from the photos, there are plenty of them. The background to IMG_0084JPG is a post-it note pad if that helps to give you some idea of scale.

  • Id help please, is it a mirid bug?

Seen last week in Dagenham. Sorry for poor picture quality.
  • My cats bought this in, what is it?

    IMG_0134.JPG

I found this on my floor, it's a bit chewed but what is it?  An Isopod, if so what kind?  I can't find it on the internet and I'm pretty sure it's not native to Lewisham!IMG_0136.JPG

  • Some small creatures

During this year, I have started to photograph more of the smaller creatures in our local Nature Reserve. The examples illustrated here don’t strike me as globular collembola but small nymphs and I wonder if you have any comment on that. I would imagine there is some probability of picking up nymphs of the barkflies we have on site - to date: Valenzuela flavidus, Ectopsocus petersi and Graphopsocus cruciatus.

  • Please help! what bug is this?

Hi could someone help me and tell me what bug this is? is it a cockroach?

found 3 in my flat over the last month, worrying me

    thanks

  • Two Collembola?

I should be grateful, as far as the images allow, to have some idea of the identity of these creatures.

Invisible Dog Fence - Invisible Dog Fence
... they can be. Many dogs are inquisitive and love to wander away from their owners. If you`re with your dog and watching it carefully then a quick corrective shout or whistle will probably be enough to bring the dog bounding back towards you. However not everybody can watch their pet all the time. Many people choose to erect large fences and gates, tall enough to keep their beloved dog safe within the boundaries of their property, but for some this is not an option. Perhaps this could be because they live in rented property. For these people an invisible dog fence is the best option. An invisible dog fence works by burying a wire underground that can transmit a radio signal. This radio signal is picked up by an invisible dog fence receiver around the dog`s collar.
